Decentralized & Resilient Stoat Architecture

Architectural specifications and modular fallback strategies for building un-killable, censorship-resistant online community platforms (Stoat, Matrix, Arweave, Nostr, & BCH Memo Protocol).

Why It Matters

Centralized chat platforms suffer from single points of technical failure (database outages) and unilateral deplatforming. When a 30,000+ member community gets shut down, years of culture and network effects are destroyed. This project defines a 4-Layer Modular Stack to ensure community persistence and data sovereignty.

The 4-Layer Modular Stack

  • Layer 0 (Base Layer): Immutable identity & server discovery via Nostr keypairs and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Memo Protocol.
  • Layer 1 (Text & Persistence): Federated Matrix room DAG, Stoat local-first CRDTs, and permanent Arweave permaweb backups.
  • Layer 2 (Decoupled Voice): Isolated WebRTC / SFU audio microservices that stay live even during text database crashes.
  • Layer 3 (Media & Video): Offloaded high-bandwidth media via Fediverse protocols (Loops.video, Pixelfed, PeerTube) & IPFS/Arweave.
